Jersey Monday: John Elway

I don't have many college football jerseys, and I believe this one here is the only one in my collection that has a name on the back, but the timing couldn't work out better for me to spotlight my John Elway Stanford jersey, with Stanford playing Virginia Tech tonight in the Orange Bowl.

Elway's college career was WAY before my time, and honestly I'd guess that many football fans my age wouldn't be able to name Elway's college. That's in large part due to the lack of team success Elway had while at Stanford -- they had just one winning season in his four years and didn't go to a bowl game. In fact, the most memorable game of Elway's college career came in a loss: the 1982 Cal-Stanford game, in which Elway led a final minute drive to give Stanford the lead, only to have to stand on the sidelines and watch this happen.

Stanford's jerseys are pretty much unchanged from the Elway era. They don't generally get mentioned much when people are talking about the "classic" NCAA football looks, and they're not really up there with say Penn State or Alabama, but there's something cool about watching Andrew Luck play and realizing that the uniform he's in is almost identical to the one John Elway wore almost 30 years ago.

Jersey Monday will continue every Monday until I run out of jerseys to spotlight. And since I’ve got more than 150 of them, that could be awhile.
