Jersey Monday: San Francisco Giants

Of the 150+ plus jerseys in my collection, there are only a handful that are name-and-number free. This Giants jersey is one of them.

I got this back in 2002, when I was in San Francisco for Apple training. I couldn't convince any of the other people in my training group to go to the Giants-Padres game on our Saturday off, so I went alone and bought this jersey.

Being by myself for the game allowed me to get a better seat, and at one point in the game I found myself sitting next to Barry Bonds's wife, which was a little awkward since I'd intended to boo Bonds the entire game. I didn't go through with that plan, but let's just say I wasn't all that unhappy when he struck out against Trevor Hoffman with the winning run on base.

I didn't break out this jersey during the Giants recent World Series win, mostly because it's packed away in my basement and I really don't care about the Giants. Still, this does mark the first time since 2001 that a team for whom I had a jersey won the World Series (excluding 2008, when I bought a Phillies jersey cheap on eBay DURING the World Series).

At some point, I might get a number put on the back of this one. I'd probably go with 24 for Willie Mays, but I could be swayed into 21 -- which Deion Sanders wore during his 52-game stint with the Giants in 1995.

Jersey Monday will continue every Monday until I run out of jerseys to spotlight. And since I’ve got more than 150 of them, that could be awhile.
