Jersey Monday: Paul Pierce

I know the Cavaliers are facing the Celtics in the playoffs, and I shouldn't be spotlighting the enemy, but consider this my attempt at a reverse jinx for Game 2 (by praising the Celtics and recounting their incredible team history, they're bound to lose now, right?).

I actually bought this jersey after Game 2 of the playoff series between the Cavaliers and Celtics in 2008. I went up to Boston for the game and it was just an awful performance by the Cavaliers, including LeBron James, who had one of his worst playoff games as a pro. After the game I headed over to the Bruins/Celtics pro shop at the TD Garden to kill some time before catching a train, and decided to splurge on this authentic Pierce jersey. I figured the Celtics were a pretty good bet to win the title that year, and I wanted a more up-to-date Celtics jersey for my collection (since, at the time, my only other Celtics jersey was a replica Antoine Walker from the late '90s).

Plus, buying the jersey and having it with me for the train ride home helped stave off some taunts from Boston fans, who, in general, can be pretty damn annoying. When I was back in Boston for the Finals, I bought a Larry O'Brien Trophy patch, like they put on the jerseys for the Finals, and intended to iron it on to this jersey at some point to commemorate Pierce's win as Finals MVP, but I still haven't gotten around to it. The fact is, I actually respected Pierce as a player, though I've lost some of that due to his constant "I'm completely and totally injured... oh, wait, no I'm not" acts during games.

Jersey Monday will continue every Monday until I run out of jerseys to spotlight. And since I’ve got more than 150 of them, that could be awhile. And if this "reverse jinx" thing works tonight, expect me to keep it up for the rest of the playoffs.
