My Own Piece of the “Dollhouse”

In all my years of buying “Buffy” related collectibles, I never got into buying screen used props. Maybe it was because I didn’t start watching the show until it was off the air -- and so the availability of these items was significantly decreased -- but I just never picked one up.

For “Dollhouse”, however, it’s a different story. I watched Joss Whedon’s latest creation from Day 1 and fell in love with the show from the beginning. So when they started auctioning off screen used props and outfits last week on eBay, I knew I had to have something.

The first set of items ended up going slightly out of my price range, though I nearly got in on the bidding for the dress worn by Whiskey (Amy Acker) in the final scene of “Epitaph One”. When the second set of items went up, I immediately honed in on the item you see to the left, Adelle DeWitt’s funeral dress from “Haunted”.

It was in that Season One episode that they introduced the concept of someone’s entire consciousness being dumped into a new body, and though some parts of the episode were clumsily handled, it was clear that was a turning point for the morality of the show -- if mortality was no longer an obstacle, then what would prevent the super rich from molding the world to their every whim?

I almost bid on the shoes actress Olivia Williams wore in the same scene, but the shoe auction was scheduled to end BEFORE the dress auction, and I didn’t want to win the shoes unless I was certain I would win the dress too. In the end, I’m happy with what I ended up with, since it’s a pretty sweet collectible from the show, and one in really nice condition. Maybe one day I can get Williams to sign it, but even if I can’t, it’s still a one-of-a-kind item from a television show I adored for two seasons.

Right now the dress is hanging in my living room, but eventually I’m going to need to get a better display for it. Due to the small size of my condo, most of my Whedonverse collectibles (action figures, statues, autographed pictures, etc) are boxed up in my basement, but I have a sketched-out plan for a Whedon room when I get a bigger place. I may need to move some things around in the plan, because I’m keeping my eyes out for items from Season 2.
