This is the episode where Angel finally shows up again in Sunnydale, with no explanation at first.
If you hadn’t been watching “Angel” (in its first season, airing right after “Buffy”), you wouldn’t have expected to see Angel at all in this episode, and when he shows up, you might have thought he was evil again. In fact, some of the characters on the show jump to that very conclusion, which at least shows the writers were thinking of that.
Still, it was nice to see Angel again on the show, even if only briefly, and in a limited role. I kind of wish the writers had done just a little more with him, but they needed to keep him distant to set up the next episode of “Angel” -- “I Will Remember You”, which is an all-time classic. Again, though, if you’re not watching “Angel” at this time, this episode just leaves you wanting.
The other big thing happening in this episode is the attack by the spirit of a Chumash Indian. It’s hard to get excited about Buffy fighting an Indian spirit, especially with Willow being all whiney about it. I have no idea where her sudden Indian guilt comes from, but it’s very off-putting (they make a slight reference to Willow’s mom, who we saw once and apparently is very issue-driven, but I’m not buying it).
I had remembered this episode as being better than this, probably because I was projecting some good feeling from “I Will Remember You.”
Spike: “You won. All right? You came in and you killed them and you took their land. That's what conquering nations do. It's what Caesar did, and he's not going around saying, ‘I came, I conquered, I felt really bad about it.’ The history of the world isn't people making friends. You had better weapons, and you massacred them. End of story.”
