Season 4, Episode 2 - Living Conditions
Original airdate: Oct. 12, 1999
Project 310 re-watch date: Feb. 16, 2009
I enjoyed this episode WAY more than the season premiere, mostly because it was funny. After a semi-sad episode like The Freshman, it’s good to get some humor injected into Season 4.
I liked the idea of Buffy’s roommate turning out to be a demon. In the past, I’d always thought it was a little too convenient that the random roommate assignments would have stuck Buffy and Kathy -- a soulless interdimensional demon -- together, but after seeing this episode for the 4th or 5th time, I can up with this explanation in my head:
There’s no reason that Kathy has to be the only demon enrolled at UC Sunnydale. It’s only because of her association with Buffy that we even see her. If Willow or Oz had ended up with a demon roommate, we would have seen that person too. In fact, given the proximity to the Hellmouth, I’d image that UC Sunnydale actually has a pretty high demon enrollment level.
As for Buffy’s freakout over Kathy’s annoying habits, at first I wanted to side with Buffy’s friends and think Buffy was going overboard. But over the course of the episode, I came around to Buffy’s point of view even before Kathy was revealed to be a demon. Sure, maybe I didn’t agree with Buffy’s “kill Kathy” strategy, but I’ve had my share of annoying roommates, so I knew where Buffy was coming from.
Buffy: “She has parts that keep growing after they're detached. She irons her jeans. She's evil! She has to be destroyed.”
