Season 3, Episode 10 - “Amends”
Original airdate: December 15, 1998
Project 310 re-watch date: Feb. 3, 2009
This is a very good episode. It’s not a great episode. A lot of people consider it a great episode, but I’m going to tell you why it’s not:
It’s that simple. Because The First was the primary villain of Season 7, we learned so much more about it than we did in this brief introductory episode. And almost everything we learned contradicted what we learned in this episode.
For example -- in this episode, it’s stated that the Bringers are a group of three priests. However, in Season 7, we see a wide-spanning army of Bringers.
Also -- in Season 7, we learn that The First is incorporeal (something that’s hinted at in this episode) which means it can’t touch anything. But we see The First, as Jenny Calendar, touch Angel plenty of times.
Stuff that happened four seasons later shouldn’t affect my view of this exact episode, but it does. That’s what happens when you re-watch episodes after you’ve seen the whole series (and it’s one of the purposes of this project). So I’ve got to leave “Amends” as a 4-star episode instead of bumping it up to a 5-star classic.
The First (in the form of Jenny Calendar): “I'm not a demon, little girl. I am something that you can't even conceive. The first evil. Beyond sin. Beyond death. I am the thing that darkness fears. You'll never see me, but I am everywhere. Every being, every thought, every drop of hate.”
(Jenny was a pure spirit on the show, and Robia LaMorte is a devout Christian so it’s incredible to hear her deliver these lines with such passion. I actually got a chill when she was saying this)
