Season 2, Episode 4 - “Inca Mummy Girl”
Original airdate: October 6, 1997
Project 310 re-watch date: Jan. 6, 2009
Random Student Alert! This time it’s “Rodney”, who shows up 3 minutes into the episode, then unwittingly frees the cursed Incan Mummy, suffering a horrible death in the process.
Xander Bad Date Alert! He ends up with aforementioned cursed Incan Mummy. So that’s praying mantis woman and cursed mummy if you’re keeping track.
This episode is solid. It definitely leans toward the “weird things happen on The Hellmouth” type of demon, but it’s not totally one of those episodes (in the way that, say, “Nightmares” was).
I like that Ampata sees Buffy as the model for a normal life, even though she clearly isn’t. I just wish the writers of the episode (Joe Reinkemeyer and Matt Kiene) didn’t feel the need to hit us over the head with that in that scene in Buffy’s bedroom. I’m pretty sure we got it just with Ampata’s line, not the subsequent sad looks from Buffy, the accidental opening of Buffy’s supply drawer, the dramatic turning off of the light... well, you get the picture.
For true “Buffy” fanatics, this episode is most notable not for anything that happens plot-wise, but for the unassuming debuts of Seth Green as Oz and Danny Strong as Jonathan (though Jonathan doesn’t actually get a name in this episode, and almost ends up as a “Random Student Alert!” victim).
Oz (we don’t even get his full name until Season 4) was an interesting character to bring into the show, and I liked that they didn’t immediately make him hook up with Willow or join the Scooby Gang. Both of those things took some time, so we got to appreciate Oz as a side character BEFORE accepting him in a relationship (the same can be said for Cordelia, while the opposite is true for Tara).
