Season 2, Episode 8 - “The Dark Age”
Original airdate: Nov. 10, 1997
Project 310 re-watch date: Jan. 10, 2009
A couple episodes back in “Halloween”, we were given a hint towards Giles’s dark side. Now, lots of shows would have dragged out this mystery for years and made us guess about what Giles did that was so bad.
In “Buffy”, they waited all of 2 episodes. Good for them. Turns out Giles and his buddies used to raise a demon back in the day, and now that demon wants to kill them all off. See, Giles isn’t just the stuffy librarian we all thought.
Re-watching the episode, it’s obvious that even as Giles’s dark past is making itself revealed, he still tries to keep it a secret. It shows how much Giles wants to be in control, which was a great character trait of his through the entire series.
One of the things I really like about this episode is that during the first part -- before the attack at the library -- there’s lots of cute one-liners that keep the episode light (which is good, because it gets REALLY dark).
With Jenny getting possessed by the demon, she’s just the latest person to be put into peril because of her association with the Scoobies. She obviously won’t be the last (and it won’t be her last time in peril either, obviously).
And hey, Ethan gets away again! It’s always fun when he does that. After he does, Ms. Calendar and Giles have their little failed reunion scene, which is very bittersweet, especially when you know what’s going to happen in about, oh, 9 episodes or so.
