Friday Morning ALCS Ramblings

• So I realized something Thursday night. If my life ever hinged on needing one starter to win a postseason game (and I have no idea why my life would ever be in that situation) I’d probably pick Josh Beckett. Holy crap, that guy’s got icewater in his veins. No, wait, he’s got something colder than that. What’s colder than icewater? I’ll tell you what is. Josh Beckett (skip to 2:53 of the video to get the reference).

• BTW, the Indians pulled one of the most awesome moves of all-time, getting Beckett’s ex-girlfriend to sing the national anthem and “God Bless America” in the 7th inning stretch. Beckett wasn’t phased in the least. But still, nice try by the Indians (worth mentioning: this is the same franchise who saw one of their pitchers get dicked over like this -- Chuck Finley was beat up by his wife, Tawny Kitaen, a former Whitesnake dancer. A few days later, the White Sox played “Here I Go Again” on the PA as Finley came out. Another awesome dick move).

• Manny Ramirez said that if the Red Sox didn’t win the ALCS, it wasn’t the end of the world. And holy crap, Manny’s actually right. Last I checked, the world will keep going well after the ALCS (well, that is, for everyone but Curt Schilling). Sometimes, beneath that facade of a retarded child, Manny Ramirez actually has some decent ideas (OK, so that only happens once every decade or so, but still...).

• This is the third time in the Wild Card era that an ALCS team has been trailing 3-2 and going home for games 6 and 7. The other two teams were the ’97 Orioles and the ’95 Mariners. They both lost Game 6... at home... to the Cleveland Indians. Eerie, huh?

• So how can I tie this ALCS post into Kelly Clarkson Week? Very easily. Game 7 of the ALCS, should there be one, is scheduled to begin at 8:00 on Sunday night. At 7:00 on Sunday night, I’ll be sitting in my seat at Mohegan Sun as the Kelly Clarkson concert begins. And trust me, my attentions will be divided. I know I don’t have a particular rooting interest in this series, but I still think I’ll have a hard time missing a Game 7.

• Looking even further ahead, Kelly has a concert scheduled for Boston on Tuesday October 23rd. If the Sox win the ALCS, Game 1 of the World Series would be in Boston on Wednesday October 24th. So no conflict there. Unfortunately, Kelly has a concert in DC scheduled for Game 1, so she wouldn’t be available to do the anthem. She does have an off day next Thursday, the date of Game 2, so she would be available for anthem duty then. And you know FOX would love to have their former American Idol star perform.
