I just got back from watching "Undercover Brother," and I was going to review it, but that can wait.
Right now, I'm just reading that Darryl Kile was found dead in his hotel room before today's scheduled Cardinals-Cubs game.
The weird thing is, I saw something scroll on the bottom of the screen on CNN before I went to the movie, but my sister was flipping through the channels, so I didn't get to read the whole thing. All I saw was "Cardinals pitcher Darryl Kile...". I figured it continued with something like "...is out for the year with a torn labrum" or... well, I don't know what else. I sure didn't expect that sentence to finish with "...found dead in Chicago hotel room," but that's probably what it said.
I can't even imagine what his family is going through right now. And his teammates. They have to play a game tomorrow, play games almost every day for the rest of the season. Obviously anyone who didn't have a rooting interest in a particular team this season is now going to be a Cardinals fan, but that's little solace to the players who have to go out there every day and deal with this.
Even with all the troubles with major professional sports in recent years, we still look at athletes as invincible in a way. Yes, they get hurt, but they do things we couldn't possibly dream of doing. For one of them just to die in his sleep in a hotel, it's almost unthinkable. But it happened.
Hopefully happier times are ahead, and Darryl Kile is in a better place.
